SPRINGFIELD -- "It's hard enough when you have to bury a loved one, but what if it was your own child? There's a memorial that now honors those children who were killed by senseless crimes or tragic accidents in Springfield. It's called The Children's Memorial and it will list those names of children who were wrongfully killed in Springfield. Families told reporter, Annette Peagler the memorial gives them a sense of peace. Families like Gloria Mongold says she remembers like it was yesterday when she received heartbreaking news about her daughter Kayla. "Hit her (Kayla) and killed her and it was a week and a half before her 13th birthday," Mongold explained.Kayla, an 8th grader, was ran over by a man who was trying to get away from Springfield Police. Her mother says although her death still hurts her family, this memorial helps."My grandmother is 87 and she can't go out to the cemetary because it's too bumpy and everything, she can't get around, but she can come here," Mongold stressed.Pretty soon the names of other children will fill up the wall. Angela Ward, the memorial's creator says her vision was to help families grieve. "It was amazing how many people came just to look for a serene place," said Ward.A place where people young and old can come together and support each other during their time of tragedy.Families like the Mongolds say it's a God send. "Each one of them have their unique story, but each one of them should never be forgotten," said Mongold.The memorial is tucked behind a building at the corner of Section and Penn in Springfield. Anyone is welcome to visit.
