Michigan voters OK legalizing marijuana

(7 Nov 2018) Michigan is aiming to build a potentially lucrative industry from the ground up with the passage of a ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana. It could do more by serving as a model for the rest of the Midwest - and possibly beyond. Michigan is the first state in the Midwest to legalize recreational marijuana. Voters Tuesday passed a ballot measure that will allow people 21 or older to buy and use the drug. North Dakota voters decided against recreational pot. Including Michigan, 10 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana. Proponent Margeaux Bruner (MAR'-goh BRUNN'-er) says having Michigan voters OK the proposal represents the crossing of "a major threshold." Kevin Sabet (suh-BET'), president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a group that opposed the initiatives in Michigan and North Dakota, says the fight continues. "The battle on legalization might have been won, but the war is far from over," he said. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan's Democratic governor-elect, said Wednesday that "a lot of states have moved forward," and she's expecting to learn lessons from them. "I will respect the will of the people. They have spoken. And, so, it's on me to work with the attorney general to ensure that we have thoughtful regulations that we promulgate," she said.
