High Court advocate Rajvinder Singh Bains speaks about the different draconian laws present in India’s judicial system that give the State far-reaching and authoritarian powers. He describes the various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and how the broad definition of unlawful activities can be used to imprison anyone the State considers a threat without even informing them of the reasons for as long as an year. He also discusses the roots of these draconian laws which lie in the colonial era, and how they have no place in a democracy.
