Bush would play so many roles _ from 20-year-old war hero to 41st president of the United States _ that it would be nearly impossible to encapsulate all of them. A Yale-educated college baseball star-turned Texas oil man-turned two-term congressman, Bush would go on to also become ambassador to China and later head of the CIA before being elected president in 1988. Three years later, he would assemble a U.S.-led international military coalition that would liberate il-rich American ally Kuwait from its invading neighbor Iraq in a war that would last just 100 hours, causing his popularity and home and abroad to soar. But only a year after that stunning victory a deepening economic crisis at home would cause his popularity plummet and deny him re-election to a second term as president. Bush, who died Friday at his Houston home at age 94, would reinvent himself once more after that stinging and what he himself called a humilitating defeat. He would go on to become a revered elder statesman, raising tens of millions of dollars for worthy causes, occasionally speaking out on politics and basking in the pride of seeing his son, George W. Bush be elected as the nation's 43rd president. In Houston, the town he called his home after leaving the White House, well wishers left flowers outside of the gated community he and his wife Barbara called home, as well as a monument garden featuring his statue outside of downtown.
