Karl Johnny Hersvik is Senior Vice President to Statoil's Research and Development division. He provides oversight to an annual budget exceeding 3 billion Norwegian kroners and 800 employees in Norway, USA, Canada, Brazil and China. Statoil's Research and Development division provides Statoil with research and technology competence which in turn helps develop current and future energy technologies for the company. Hersvik joined Statoil in 1998 and has held his role as Senior Vice President since January 2011.

A part from his current role at Statoil, Hersvik has held several professional and management positions at Statoil including chief reservoir engineer, subsurface operations manager among others in business development. He has also served Statoil as project lead for the West Qurna project in Iraq and as vice president for Production Technology. Prior to joining Statoil, he was a co-founder of several IT start ups. Hersvik is a member of the Advisory Board of Energy Venture. He is also the Chairman of the Board for the OG21 initiative formed by the Norwegian Ministry for Oil and Energy and tasked with the responsibility of setting the strategy for Norwegian interests within oil and gas technology. In addition,

Hersvik is a member of several industry and academia collaboration boards as well as holding office as the Vice Chairman of the Board to the Norwegian Academy of Science. Hersvik is from Bergen, Norway and holds a Cand Scient degree in Industrial Mathematics from the University of Bergen.
