This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Performed by asylum seekers from Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, Telema reveals how refugees arise from former struggles to find refuge in Hong Kong. The production this year features local artist Jill Vidal as the female lead and a cast of more than ten African refugees.

Telema, meaning “arise” in the Congo language Swahili-Bantu, is a Hong Kong-based authentic African musical exploring the story of African refugees in Hong Kong, and the struggles they endure in a foreign land.

The entire production is based on true stories of African refugees, hoping and aiming to raise awareness for the African refugee community in Hong Kong, where around 7,000 asylum seekers and refugees who have been forced to leave their home country are desperately seeking for justice and assistance.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
