Windows Vista Erratic Closing Odd Behavior

Has anyone ever seen this behavior from Windows Vista before? This is the fourth time in six months I've had it happen. While working away windows would suddenly start closing like someone was mashing ALT-F4 over and over again. It would only be the active window and as I click on each to gain focus it would try to close it. Documents and screens that needed to be saved would pull up a prompt and close immediately so it was a race to click on don't save. In the end I finally closed all the windows which prompted a shutdown selection.
