G S Attwal conducts an exclusive interview with Randeep Singh Lall - a member of the founding team of SWAT, a team of dedicated people who come together to help others. Randeep tells the story of how in 2009 SWAT discovered over a 200 young and very old homeless people from Punjab and other areas of India & Pakistan sleeping rough in the streets of Southall and surrounding areas. He tells us: "in the first year of our project we worked from the boots of our cars, in the second year we borrowed a van and in the third year as the homeless project grew from strength to strength we were blessed with our own van. We didn't have the solution for the problem but we did what we could to help them and to raise awareness on the issue. The more awareness we raised the more the authorities took their job seriously and started working with SWAT to come up with a solution." SWAT provides many different types of support including: Signposting to drug care and advice Providing clean clothing Providing sleeping bags Providing hot food Providing moral support Assisting with those who want to return back home Putting them in contact with health centers Raising awareness in various ways to highlight the plight of these people For more information or to support the SWAT team visit: www.swatuk.org
