The heyday of
the flat-Earth mythology, in fact, did not arrive until the half-century of
1870 to 1920. The reason had nothing to do with facts and everything to do with
the ideological atmosphere created by the struggles over evolution. That
atmosphere led authors like John W. Draper ("The History of the Conflict
Between Religion and Science," 1874) and Andrew Dickson White ("A
History of the Warfare of Science and Theology in Christendom," 1896) to
recast all the past in terms of the contemporary antagonism between biblical
literalism and science.

As to how the myth that people during Medieval times thought the Earth
was flat came about, this is up for debate. The idea seems to have first
popped up in the 17th century and appears to have been, at least in part, put
forth by secular scientists railing against the ignorance and misguided notions
of religious groups (specifically Catholics), who they claimed in Medieval
times believed the world was flat- ironically, despite the lack of much
evidence supporting that claim, and the numerous documented instances of
religious scholars from that era stating the Earth is round. The myth gained significant
traction in the 19th century with various works, such as Andrew Dickson
White’s History of the Warfare of Science with Theology.

There’s a pervasive notion that Protestant
religions espoused a belief in a flat Earth in the 17th century as a way to
spur some beef against Catholic teachings (which was ironically peripherally
supported by atheists and agnostics), driven by the writings of John William
Draper, Andrew Dickson White, and Washington Irving. But there’s no real
evidence to support this.

The Start of the flat Earth Myth
Andrew White
(1832–1918) — He founded Cornell University as one of the first completely
secular colleges in America. White simply wanted to keep science from what he
viewed as the dogmatic and constricting procedures of the church. Like Draper,
White does not mention that Lactantius and Cosmas were minor players whose views
were rarely referenced by other medieval theologians or scientists. More
respected and popular theologians such as the Venerable Bede, Thomas Aquinas
and Roger Bacon all wrote that the Earth was a sphere.

John Draper and Andrew Dickson White (the President of Cornell University) were very successful in getting the flat earth myth published and taught as fact right down to today. Just random and informal poll of people I’ve talked to in the last few days (at the grocery store, at the post office, while I was waiting for Lady Buzzkill to get her hair done) showed that almost everyone still believes that people in the middle ages thought the world was flat
