Thirteen years ago, before joining the Perimeter Institute and University of Waterloo, Avery Broderick and frequent collaborator Avi Loeb, were pondering what appeared at the time to be an arcane mystery: the 2004 detection of flares erupting from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy -- an object called Sagittarius A* (or Sgr A* for short). 

Now, in a new study published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, an international team using one of the most powerful observatories on the planet has uncovered the first ever observational evidence for their theory, a sweet moment for Broderick.
