Rhythm is about how we leave one state to enter another. Our inner sense of timing guides our movement into this new state of being. This is rhythm. This video is a brief selection of clips filmed during the creative devising sessions Eugene Skeef led in the making of Motherland, a dance theatre piece exploring belonging and identity against the backdrop of the transAtlantic slave trade. The experience demonstrated the unity of creativity. Everyone involved did everything. People who did not consider themselves to be dancers moved with grace and conviction; those who had not sung before, and were terrified of using the voice as an instrument of creative expression, sang with a previously untapped eloquence; and members of the cast who did not believe they could act transformed into newly discovered characters. All traces of self-consciousness were flushed away as everyone progressed deeper into the cave of being human.
