Mortal Kombat is back on consoles for its tenth iteration this week, as a slightly less violent companion to the new season of Game of Thrones.

Mortal Kombat X (pronounced "ex"]) is a fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios. It is the tenth main installment in the Mortal Kombat video game series and was released on April 14, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, scheduled to be ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by High Voltage Software on 2015. NetherRealm's mobile team also developed a mobile version for iOS and Android devices. The iOS version was released on April 7, 2015.

The game is said to include a new, original and non-linear[13] storyline "showcasing some of the game's oldest characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil that tie the tale together."[14] It was announced the story would begin at the end of the previous game and then eventually transition to 25 years into the future, placing emphasis on aged veterans, new characters, and the next-generation offspring of the previous fighters.[19]

Following the defeat of Shao Kahn, Shinnok attacks Earth with his army of Netherrealm forces, including the resurrected Earthrealm warriors who were killed during Kahn's invasion and are now under Quan Chi's control. After fighting and freeing their former comrades, a strike team led by Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Kenshi open a portal to the Jinsei Chamber, the source of Earthrealm's life force, where Raiden and Fujin are battling Shinnok. They distract Shinnok long enough for Raiden to steal Shinnok's amulet and imprison him inside it, but Quan Chi manages to escape.
