(9 Nov 2018) US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis met his Chinese counterpart in Washington on Friday. Mattis hosted at enhanced honour cordon welcoming Chinese State Councilor and Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe to the Pentagon. Top diplomats and defence chiefs for the US and China called the meeting in Washington to try to tamp down tensions on issues that have cooled the relations between the two world powers. Earlier on Friday, both US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Mattis sat down with their Chinese counterparts at the State Department. The talks were due to be held in Beijing last month but were postponed after Washington announced new arms sales to Taiwan, and US and Chinese vessels came close to colliding in the South China Sea.
