IO-Link closes the communication gap on the last meters to the process: 
Systematic diagnostics concepts and the efficient handling of parameter data are required on all levels of automation technology. This necessitates the intelligent connection of sensors and switching devices (actuators) to the control level. 
The open IO-Link communication standard is ideally suited for this task.
