UPDATE: Washington voters let us down yesterday (11/4/14) and passed Initiative 594. This is a sad day for law abiding Washington State gun owners and the consequences will be harsh. This will ultimately have an effect on the way reviews are conducted at Fire Mountain Outdoors as it will be illegal for Mark and Bob handle the same weapon or exchange weapons with each other without going through an extensive background check each time a firearm changes hands. A law that was meant to "close the gunshow loophole" by requiring background check goes far beyond that. Just handing a firearm to someone that isn't a 1st or 2nd generation blood relative will be a crime on January 1, 2015 Initiative 594 is the latest and most comprehensive attempt to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners in the Evergreen State. Although proponents describe it as a “universal background check” measure, Initiative 594 is in reality a universal handgun registration scheme. Under I-594, every time a handgun is transferred, the person receiving the handgun will have their name added to the government database being maintained by the state Department of Licensing. Initiative 594 creates a huge, unenforceable regulatory scheme which disproportionately burdens law-abiding firearm sellers and purchasers. It would not prevent criminals from obtaining firearms, and would divert scarce law enforcement resources. Perhaps even more alarmingly, I-594 creates a massive government database of law-abiding handgun owners. In the end, I-594 is nothing more than a foot-in-the-door to universal firearm registration. DETAILS OF A DEEPLY FLAWED INITIATIVE Initiative 594 is a universal handgun registration scheme being promoted by a very wealthy group of anti-gun elitists who have already raised more than $7 million to qualify and pass this initiative. Although they describe it as a “universal background check” measure, it is not universal because criminals will never comply with the requirements. It is, however, universal handgun registration. Virtually every firearm transfer - with very few and limited exceptions - would be required to go through a licensed firearms dealer under the provisions of I-594. I-594 will specifically regulate transfers, not sales. Under the language of I-594, in virtually all cases, a person merely handing his or her firearm to a family member or a friend cannot do so without brokering the transfer through a gun dealer with the accompanying fees, paperwork, taxes and, in the case of handguns, state registration. I-594 also doubles the state waiting period on handgun sales from five to ten days and extends it to every private transfer of a handgun!
