In their ceaseless search for Magua, Uncas and Big Snake check every bush until they find a piece of Clora’s clothing that had torn off on a sharp rock.
Meanwhile, positioned atop a hill, Magua and his Huron become aware that our friends are on to them. Leaving a trail of false tracks behind him, Mugua leads our friends to an inlet, and then, at nightfall, surrounds and attacks them. However, the Huron underestimate our friends’ ability and the intuition of the Mohicans; perceiving a trap, our friends succeed in using the Huron’s trap to their own advantage, where Uncas throws Magua into the river following furious hand-to-hand combat. Magua is dragged downstream by the current. With great dismay, only now does Uncus realize that no one will be able to tell him Cora’s whereabouts. Our friends attempt to hone in on the Huron’s tracks. Our group then arrives in the forest. Along the river, someone is hobbling along the shore: it is Magua, gravely wounded, but still alive.
