It was the first time I visited the Mhar monastery since it was founded back in XVII. Driving from Kharkiv to Kiev almost monthly every time I saw the bell tower of the complex that turned out to be quite a historical place. The legend has it, there was a monastery on the same place before the Tatar invasion in XIII century, though the official founding year is 1619. In 1692 the initial wooden church was replaced by a more solid building designed by a German architect paid by Hetman Mazepa. The Neoclassical bell tower took 60 years to build, from 1785 to 1844.Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s son Yuri spent a year here in 1663 under the monk name of Gedeon. Many historical figures, including writers Taras Shevchenko and Alexander Pushkin, and rulers like Peter I have visited Mhar.Stopping by in Poltava region always feels like reading a history book.
