EU claims step forward in approach on lobbyists

At a press conference today in Brussels, Siim Kallas, Member of the EC in charge of Administrative Affairs, Audit and Anti-fraud said today, in relation with the activities of lobbyists in the European institutions, that the European Commisssion will be launching its own interest representatives's register on 23 June 2008.

I think that both today's report of the European Parliament (Friedrich's report) and also the Commission's register are a big step ahead to have a more transparent culture of decision-making in the European institutions, the Commissioner told journalists.

Parliament today voted in favour of a mandatory public register for lobbyists, common to the Council, Commission and Parliament and providing for full financial disclosure. Lobbyists would also have to comply with a code of conduct and face sanctions if they infringed it. The report was initially drafted by Alexander Stubb (EPP-ED, FI) who has since left the European Parliament to become Finland's Foreign Minister and has been taken up by Ingo FRIEDRICH (EPP-ED, DE).
