In 2000 what started as a controlled burn led to the very out of control Cerro Grande Fire. Dry conditions and winds allowed the blaze to spread to Los Alamos, the pueblos of Santa Clara and San Pueblo and into the Santa Fe National Forest. 400 homes were damaged or destroyed and the flames burned 47,650 acres.
