State-owned oil company Petrotrin says its transition is going smoothly. In a statement, Petrotrin says as it continues to wind down its refinery operations, motorists in Trinidad and Tobago have been unaffected as the company shifted seamlessly away from refining crude to importing refined fuel and exporting crude oil. Last Saturday, October 27th, Petrotrin received its first shipment of refined fuel - one of 16 cargoes that will be delivered during the next four months under an agreement with BP's Latin America Integrated Sales and Trading Group. On Tuesday, the company loaded about 500,000 barrels of crude oil onto a tanker, its first shipment of oil for export. On Thursday, the company's union, the OWTU, is in the Industrial Court trying to prove that Petrotrin failed "in good faith to treat and to enter into negotiation with the Union for the purpose of collective bargaining." It follows the implementation of plans to restructure the company with the formation of two new companies, Paria Fuel Trading Company and Heritage Petroleum Company Limited, which are expected to begin operation on December 1st.
