United Nations, New York, 11 June 2009 - In his monthly press conference, Secretary Ban Ki-moon has addressed concerns about the Global Flu Pandemic.

He told reporters that countries around the world must be prepared to tackle the virus as and when it strikes.

Mr Ban expressed concern for poor and developing countries where he said people sought healthcare much later. As a result, such countries may experience higher rates of infection.

Along with the latest WHO announcement of the Global Flu Pandemic, Mr Ban shed more light on the U.N. World Financial and Economic Crisis summit that will take place in New York at the end of the month. He said developing countries will be a priority at the high-level summit.

Mr. Ban stressed that the financial crisis must not be a reason for industrialised countries to abandon their commitment to the world's poorest people.
