The environment on Earth is constantly changing in ways that impact all of us. Through ocean exploration, from mapping and characterizing previously unseen seafloor to collecting and disseminating data about ocean waters, we can establish the baseline information needed to better understand, monitor, and prepare for environmental change. For more on why ocean exploration matters, see:http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/world-oceans-day/index.html [Video: This urchin was seen during the Okeanos Explorer Gulf of Mexico 2012 expedition. Despite having been the focus of exploration for decades, the deep waters of the Gulf remain relatively poorly understood. The purpose of the Gulf expedition was to help reduce that large unknown. Scientists focused on the deep unexplored diversity of seafloor environments in the northern Gulf of Mexico region. They encountered everything from cold seeps to deep coral communities, undersea canyons, shipwrecks, brine pools, and more.
