For many scuba divers, the Indonesian Triangle is one of the best places to dive. Made up of the coastal waters surrounding Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste, it is filled with some breathtaking sites and amazing species. Sometimes called the Amazon of the Sea, it is home to over 2000 species of reef fish and 76% of the world's coral species. Divers in this area might even be lucky enough to see a whale shark or a coelacanth. There are also some endemic species, including 235 coral reef fish and 15 coral species. Some scientists believe this is where much of the marine species originated and others think that these high biodiversity levels are tied to the movements of sea plates. Regardless of how it came about, the Indonesian Triangle is considered the most diverse marine ecosystem on earth.
