It's not for the climb, it's not for technique, it's not for following a technical route -- it's for the fall, all for the fall.

It's that moment, at the end of the day, when you are tired, and you feel that your fingers are giving way, and inside you cry, trying to keep your strength, and inside you cry, for fear that you will fail, and yet, it is so relieving from the world's pains, and you grunt, and you go on, and then you look down, and have that moment of truth -- truth about how sincere is your conviction that you want to take the fall; and as you look down, and then at your handholds and your footholds, and decide how much effort you will have to put it to clear them, in your exhausted and inebriated state, you wonder if it is all worth the trouble, and the potential pain, and then you decide whether or not to go ahead, or to bail out, climb down, and try another day.

It doesn't matter that you're doing such a private act in such a public place, all you can do, up there, is cry like a child, from all your finger stresses and strains, as you push on, and you try to compensate by pawing and fingering at the handholds, as grip from your your fingers give way -- all in the name of the giddy delight that comes after the fall's fright; that fall that pumps you up so much more than the climb; and yet, leaves you shaking with ecstasy from such visceral delight!
