United Nations, New York, September 2011- Following a military coup in 2008, senior UN envoy Said Djinnit along with regional partners helped to persuade the regime to cede power peacefully. For two years, Djinnit, head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), shuttled back and forth to Guinea over fifty times, keeping up diplomatic pressure for a swift and peaceful return to constitutional order. Fears of widespread ethnic and political violence were not realized. In December 2010, Guinea held its first democratic elections since independence.
