Shaken baby cases raise concern

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- Prosecutors in Kenton County have  been saddened and concerned over the last 10 days since they have investigated four cases in which babies suffered serious injuries. So, far two fathers are facing assault charges. A Facebook page has been set up for Raiden Radcliffe. It includes photos of the three-month-old in the ICU. His father, Casey Radcliffe, faces a first degree assault charge. "In the past two weeks, specifically in a 10-day period, we had reports of four cases where children were presenting with serious injuries including broken femurs, broken legs and brain bleeds because of injuries," said Kate Bennett, Asst. Kenton Co. Commonwealth's Attorney. Austin Myers also faces a first degree assault charge. Authorities say he caused injuries to his four-month-old son who suffered rib fractures, fractures in both legs and the infant only gained three ounces in a month. "I've never seen anything like it in my almost 10 years as a Commonwealth's attorney. We certainly, unfortunately, prosecute a lot of shaken baby cases but rarely do we get so many, so close together," said Rob Sanders, Kenton Co. Commonwealth's Attorney. Sanders said the cases appear to be a sad coincidence. He usually sees four or five cases in a year - not 10 days. Prosecutors have advice for parents that may prevent another case like Raiden Radcliffe's. "If a baby is fussing or becomes a very stressful situation for a parent we would urge those parents to take some time, place the child in the crib and walk away. Take a minute away, take a breather before a situation could potentially escalate," Bennett said.   Bennett said hospitals and police stations are safe places where a parent can take a child if he or she is having trouble taking care of a child and coping with the stress.
