The present FNM administration is tone deaf regarding taxation.

While they feebly attempt to defend the tax increase, the bottom line is that the general public is not buying into their plans.

They even have tried the tactic of claiming that there are only two options: Taxation or Borrowing. In doing so, they have exposed their haste in ramming this plan down the throats of Bahamians.

Increasing government funds through taxation is a lazy and unsophisticated means of trying to fix any fiscal deficiency. It also has been proven to stifle economic development, which is the exact opposite of what they should be doing.

Their lack of creativity is astounding and the FNM needs to reevaluate what it means to build a strong economy.

To boot, a hint of arrogance is seeping through as they grandly claim to be making a "tough decision" in increasing taxes. No. Increasing taxes is not a tough decision. Increasing taxes is what governments do when they do not have the depth of experience and intellect to come up with alternate solutions.

To make matters worse, they have so many new members of parliament that few of them will go against party lines, regardless of their personal opinions. The glaring majority of them will sing for their supper.

In any event, they already have conceded that their decision to raise taxes will cost them the next election, which isn't a comforting thought either. Is anyone paying attention to what they are saying? They know that their decision is not in the best interests of the people, yet they still forge forward.

Bahamians need to speak up and demand better options.
