"Rope and T-Shirts: what do mountaineering objects tell us about gender?" - Dr. Julie Rak Julie Rak is a member of the Canadian Mountain Studies Initiative at the University of Alberta. While recovering from a mobility-restricting illness, Julie discovered that Edmonton has seven round-the-clock poker gaming rooms, and worked her way to being one of the better poker players in the city. Julie is also an amateur general mountaineer and ice climber in the Canadian Rockies. Julie teaches courses about autobiography, gender and sexuality theory, Aboriginal writing and mountaineering writing. She teaches and researches at the University of Alberta and focused on Doukhobor autobiography in her PhD from McMaster University. Julie's talk: "Rope and T-Shirts: what do mountaineering objects tell us about gender?" In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
