Calcium and pH Control Before Things Go Wrong

Some of you may recall the assorted issues I faced with pH control in my aquaponics last season.  Since I didn't feel like dealing with that again I have decided to try and get some control before things go wrong at all.  A little bit of checking around showed that the two most popular and natural solutions were oyster shells and egg shells.  We don't eat oysters but we do eat eggs.
I saved a bunch of egg shells and washed them before tossing them into the microwave for a few minutes.  It seemed like the fastest way to keep it safe.  Getting a nylon stocking was a much more interesting adventure but I'm sure you can imagine some of the looks I got ...
With a pH level down to 6 I decided to toss the nylon filled with egg shells into the settlement tank.  A clothspin seems strong enough to hold it all in place for now and I'm good to go!
In theory the slighty acidic water will eat away at the egg shells and balance the waters pH.  While doing so it should also be adding calcium to the water to help the plants.  In theory ...
I'll test the pH levels over the next few days and weeks to see if things are improving.  As I understand it I can get a few different nutrients into my system like this so I'll be sure to post updates when I get around to trying that!
