In 1853 French composer Charles Gounod composed this melody for "Ave Maria" over the chordal progressions of a prelude by J. S. Bach (from "The Well-Tempered Clavier"). Performed here on the organ at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Burlingame, California.
