#InspirationsFromTheMaster - Ganesha's big head symbolizes immense intelligence and his big ears remind us that learning starts after listening (Shravanam). Then, only when we think about what it is we have heard do we understand the exact logic in a way that it becomes our own. The knowledge received is being churned and this is called, Mananam, depicted by Ganesha's trunk. 
The trunk, despite being a huge equipment and capable of massive kind of work, can also carry out delicate tasks that require attention to detail. It is a representation of the same quality of our mind that we require in order to understand the knowledge of the scriptures. We need our mind to be so fine, so subtle, so sensitive to be able to understand "no boundaries", "infinite", and truth in its essence. The same mind also needs to work in the world outside; dealing with people and chores. Ganesha's trunk is that quality of our mind which has that diversity to be able to cope with all the different challenges that come with completing such a huge range of tasks. 
So next time you see Ganesha and his trunk, don't fret about the direction it is facing. Instead, focus on the way your mind is facing. When you turn towards the truth and when you turn towards Ganesha, then you bless yourself.
