The political establishment in Britain has been in a state of shock in recent weeks. First the expenses scandal in the Lower House of Parliament,then the near collapse of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour government. Brown's party also suffered a major setback at the European elections. Now even former pop stars like David Van Day are stepping into the fray. Inhibitions have disappeared and a lack of political experience is no longer an obstacle. Some of the newcomers have little to recommend them apart from the promise not to make false expense claims.
