VIOLATION OF ENVIRONMENT LAWS BY CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES IN ASSAM

CVB NEWS- A number of companies engaged in quarrying, crushing, breaking and earth cutting activities in Assam are allegedly flouting environment protection rules and regulations posing grave threat to the forest resources in the state.
Gayatri-East Coast Insulation (Gayatri ECI) has been supervising work on the East-West corridor project since 2006.
The company has set up a plant at Sukapara in lower Assam where the raw materials like boulders and rocks are brought from Nakkati Hill situated in Bongaigaon district of Assam for the purposes of breaking and crushing.
The forest department of Bongaigaon had earlier allotted the company half a hectare of land at Sukapara for setting up a plant but the company has allegedly encroached upon another 30 hectare of land on which it has been illegally destroying the valuable forest resources.
The company is said to be carrying out blasting of rock using explosives for which permissible limits is pegged at one or two by the government, but the aforesaid company allegedly carries  out more than 20 explosions violating the regulations.
