Some of the personal belongings of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, including his glasses, sandals and watch, have been sold at auction in New York for $1.8 million. The auction took place despite India's objections and a last-minute plea by the owner, James Otis, to have the items withdrawn from sale. The winning bid came from Indian billionaire businessman Vijay Mallya, who has pledged to donate the items back to the Indian government. But the New York auction house says it will delay the transfer of the items for two weeks while all the technical and legal issues are addressed.
