The Columbus Police Foundation again afforded personnel from the Columbus Division of Police to a training trip to Washington, D.C. Once again, personnel had the opportunity to tour the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Museum of African American History and Culture. These visits teach personnel the role that law enforcement officers played in fairly recent history, both in Germany and in the U.S. The experience causes personnel to contemplate ways to ensure we are doing our best to protect and serve Central Ohio communities. Every year since 2015 the Columbus Division of Police has taken a training trip to Washington D.C. to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Attendees, including police officers and non-sworn personnel, participate in a program called "Law Enforcement & Society: Lessons of the Holocaust." This program challenges participants to look inward as they learn about the role of Nazi police during the Holocaust. This year Chief Kimberley Jacobs was also able to take the group to the National Museum of African American History & Culture. The participants learned about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. To date more than 250 police personnel have benefited from this training. Efforts are being made to make this an annual event. Thank you to the Columbus Police Foundation and their partners for funding this worthwhile and thought provoking experience.
