Wolfgang Menzel served over 30 years in the German armed forces. He experienced a mental breakdown after a humanitarian mission in Bosnia and has since suffered from depression and insomnia. But Menzel is far from a unique case. Increasing numbers of soldiers are now returning from tours of duty with post-traumatic stress disorders and almost 500 cases have been registered over the last three years. The government is now responding by setting up a center for affected soldiers.
