General Assembly President: Financial crisis is a global responsibility

United Nations, New York, 23 June 2009 - President of the United Nations General Assembly,  Miguel D'Escoto says now is not the time to point the finger of blame at certain countries for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

Convening a high-level Summit on the crisis and its impact on developing countries in New York this week, Mr D'Ecosto told reporters at a press conference that he was "relieved" that a revised outcome document for adoption at the end of the three-day meeting has been finalized. The President has stressed that the gathering is not concerned with the good of some, but the good of all.

The major high-level gathering aimed at tackling the global economic meltdown and its effects on the developing world will begin on Wednesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Over three days, delegates will work to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all Member States.
