The purpose of this presentation is to describe student engagement within an innovative cross-age program in an Australian secondary school. The focus of the presentation is an investigation of student engagement at a school that was inspired by the practices of an educational intervention designed to enhance the engagement of marginalised young people. The school applied aspects of these practices across the whole school to enhance the engagement of secondary students.The findings indicated that some aspects of the intervention that promoted engagement did transfer and others did not. These findings are important for schools and policy makers to consider when schools adapt interventions and innovations.


Alison had an established and successful career as an Interior Decorator, Artist and Kitchen Design for 15 years.

In 2008, she decided to pursue a career in Teaching.  After experiencing the ethos of various secondary colleges, she was enthusiastically employed at McClelland College actively teaching and mentoring all year levels (7-VCE) across five subject areas, (Art, Media, Studio Art, Visual Communication and History).  Alison also works alongside other industry trained staff to facilitate students from all academic levels in the McClelland College Academy Program.  She is passionate in allowing students to engage in real industry work experience through this vehicle, as this allows for inclusivity for all students at McClelland.
