This is a video in my new series of 1-on-1 interviews, conducted with people who - in my view - are doing interesting work with ideas that matter, often (though not exclusively) from the field of philosophy.

In this one, I have a sit-down conversation before the Stoicon 2018 conference with Walter Matweychuk, a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) practitioner, whose practice is based in Philadelphia. We range over a number of topics, centering largely on connections and comparisons between Stoicism and REBT. We also discuss his training and work with Albert Ellis, how REBT is related to other cognitive approaches in psychotherapy.

One topic we discuss at length is understanding and managing our emotions, including fear, sadness, pain, anxiety, grief, anger, and loneliness. We also talk about the intersection between the emotional and the cognitive, and how the thoughts we have, express, or assume about matters affect how we feel about them. Another topic that we discuss is what is needed for people to decide to change their lives.
