In 1963, I spent a week in Dublin at a Folk Festival, not as a singer, but as a dancer. (See 'The Dirk Dance of the Kings of Mann). During our stay, we climbed to the top of the Nelson monument in O'Connell Street from where there was a magnificent view of the city. Three years later, this was no longer possible, as an IRA bomb destroyed the column, which had been a smaller replica of the one in Trafalgar Square in London. Tommy Makem wrote this song about the event.
