The freezing weather is expected make roadways icy all across the area today, both TxDOT and city crews are keeping a close eye on driving conditions. Bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways are the areas that drivers need to be most wary of in freezing weather conditions. That is because elevated roadways freeze first. Drivers are safer taking lower and slower back roads if possible. TxDOT is not currently closing the Harbor Bridge. Spokesman Rickey Dailey says it will only close if TxDOT, law enforcement, and local elected officials collectively decide the bridge is unsafe for driving. All TxDOT traffic updates are being posted online. Yesterday TxDOT crews put a brine solution on the bridge. After pre-treating other bridges and overpasses, today they continued spraying those areas. Elevated structures have been treated on I-37, US-77, US-171, the Crosstown Expressway, SPID, and the JFK Causeway. The city is also keeping a close eye on roadways. The Emergency Operations Center was activated earlier today, allowing city officials, the fire department, and police to monitor conditions as they worsen.
