(1 Oct 2018) The streets of the West Bank town of Ramallah were empty on Monday as Palestinians observed a general strike to protest Israel's contentious Nation-State Law. Critics say the law, which passed last month, sidelines Israel's non-Jewish citizens. The strike, called by all the Palestinian political factions, includes the private and public sectors and comes "to support the Arab Follow Up Committee (Israeli Arab) in its rejection of the Nation State Law." Israel's 1948 declaration of independence defined the country as a Jewish and democratic state. The government says the bill merely enshrines the country's existing character, but critics say it undercuts Israel's democratic values and marginalizes the country's Arab minority, which makes up about 20 percent of the population. One clause downgrades the Arabic language from official to "special" standing.
