It's time for a close up on Big Red's new companion! During this visit to the Fernow Hall nest area, we get a great look at the male's rich brown plumage and pale, streaked underside. Plumage color and pattern are highly variable in some Red-tailed Hawk populations, and individuals may be broadly classified as light or dark morphs. Plumage characteristics also differ regionally, with the "Harlan's" Red-tailed Hawk being among the darkest of the subspecies and the "Krider's" being among the lightest! Watch live at allaboutbirds.org/cornellhawks A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since at least the 2012, making use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012 and 2015, they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall.
