There is no difference between Maharaj-ji and the Atman, but as Ramana Maharshi says "God, Guru, Self are One."  Maharaj-ji as a friend, though, gives a warm feeling as the ego has difficulty seeing itself as God. (Excerpt from Webcast 2-28-10).
