Sir Malcolm Sargent's version of the famous 'Air' from Bach's Suite No. 3 retains the strings for the principal melody but gives the accompaniment to woodwinds. This provides a kind of organ continuo background to the music which caused one critic to write "the effect is lovely." In this 1947 recording, Sargent himself conducts the Liverpool Philharmonic in a transfer made by Mark Obert-Thorn for a 2-CD set of Bach Transcriptions 78rpm discs issued by Biddulph Recordings.
