This year the French town of Lourdes is attracting far bigger crowds than usual this year, among them Pope Benedict. Located in the footholds of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has developed into a major place of Christian pilgrimage. It has been famous ever since 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous said the Virgin Mary appeared to her in the remote Grotto of Massabielle one hundred and fifty years ago.
