The USTA honored Kathy Langer from Rockwall, Texas, with the 2009 Seniors Service Award. The award is given annually to the person most deserving of the respect and honor of all seniors, and is awarded on the basis of the recipients willingness, cooperation and participation, either in play or organizational work for the betterment and furtherance of senior competition.

Langer was recognized at the USTA Annual Meeting, on March 22, 2010 in Dallas, TX.

The Seniors Service Award was established in 1958 to recognize and honor a person for service to senior tennis. The honor was first awarded to W. Dickson Cunningham of Rahway, N.J., for whom the trophy is named.

Langer is a passionate player, volunteer and advocate for tennis, and because of her accomplishments, love for the sport and fighting spirit, the USTA recognized her with this honor. Langer did not play tennis until age 33 but by age 45, she was competing in national tournaments. The accomplished player has not lost a match in a Texas senior age division tournament this decade and has been No. 1 in her singles or doubles age division for the past 15 years. In 2009, she was ranked No. 4 nationally in Womens 70s singles and No. 1 in Womens 70s team doubles. She was also a member of the 2008 U.S. team for the Althea Gibson Cup tournament in Turkey, and was recognized by the Dallas Morning News as a local Good Sport.

For every hour that Langer plays tennis, she puts in the same amount of time volunteering and recruiting others to do the same. Langer has been active in the Dallas Tennis Association (DTA) since 1995, serving as its president from 2000-02 and helping with area tournaments and fundraisers. Her dedication was recognized with a DTA Volunteer of the Year Award. She also served USTA Texas on the Executive, Management (Secretary of the section), Membership, Communications (Chair of the Communications Committee) and Adult/Senior councils. Since 2004, Langer has chaired the USTA National Adult/Senior Competition Committee and for two two-year terms. Langer will also be honored at the USTA Texas annual meeting in a few weeks with the sections Julius Zinn Seniors Service Award.

Kathys passion, energy and drive are an inspiration to those who play tennis and volunteer, said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. Her dedication to grow the game and positive attitude make her an ideal USTA advocate for senior tennis.

Langers name will be engraved on the Seniors Service Award and a replica trophy will be given to her.
