Some 1000 people are killed by weaponry every day,from small arms to land mines and bombs. Arms sales are booming - despite the lip service politicians pay to regulation.Eighteen NATO Allies signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Oslo in December 2008,but such agreements pale into insignificance at IDEX,the International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi. Deals worth billion are signed here - many of which are theoretically illegal. The UN's annual Conference on Disarmament takes place at the same time: The 65-nation conference is the world's only multilateral disarmament negotiating body.
