This video shows a 2012 VW Passat TDI putting out some seriously high EGTs during the first mile of driving.  This happens in 3rd gear and higher until the computer is satisfied with the temperature of the DPF and catalytic converter.  I should also mention that the car has a Malone DSG tune and you can see what gear it's in on the instrument cluster.
