2009 Inamori Ethics Prize Recipient Mary Robinson
Former U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights Mary Robinson has been named recipient of the 2009 Inamori Ethics Prize. She is the second honoree of the international ethics award, presented by the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence.

Karen Beckwith, Ph.D.
Beckwith is the Flora Stone Mather Professor in the Department of Political Science, where she offers courses on U.S. politics, women and politics, and political movements and participation. She is the founding editor, with Lisa Baldez (Dartmouth College), of Politics & Gender, the journal of the Women and Politics Research Section of the American Political Science Association. She has also been co-editor of the Gender and Politics Series of the Oxford University Press, and served as President of the American Political Science Associations Women and Politics Research Section.
Beckwiths book Political Women and American Democracy, with co-editors Christina Wolbrecht and Lisa Baldez, was published in 2008. Her most recent work, Comparative Politics and the Logics of a Comparative Politics of Gender, is the lead article in a symposium, Toward a Comparative Politics of Gender, to be published in Perspectives on Politics (2010). Articles in the symposium were first developed for presentation at a research seminar at Case Western Reserve University, funded by a Presidential Initiative Grant.

Patricia Marshall, Ph.D.
Marshall is Associate Professor of Bioethics. Her research interests and publications have focused on multi-culturalism and the application of bioethics practices, international research ethics and informed consent, HIV prevention among injection drug users, procurement practices for organ transplantation in India, and clinical ethics consultations. Currently, she is working on a book that explores the relationship between anthropology and bioethics. She is also preparing a monograph for the World Health Organization that addresses ethical challenges related to biomedical and behavioral research in resource-poor settings. Marshall is a past member of the executive boards of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, the Society for Medical Anthropology, and the Society for Bioethics Consultation.

Michael Scharf, J.D.
Scharf, professor of law and Director of the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center at Case Western Reserve University, served as Attorney Advisor for United Nations Affairs at the U.S. Department of State during the first Bush and Clinton administrations. He has won two national book awards, the Case School of Law Alumni Associations Distinguished Teacher Award and Ohio Magazines Excellence in Education Award. In 2005, Scharf and the Public International Law and Policy Group, a non-governmental organization he co-founded, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by six governments and the prosecutor of an international criminal tribunal for the work they have done to help in the prosecution of major war criminals, such as Slobodan Milosevic, Charles Taylor and Saddam Hussein.
